The Crower 8 is one of the most fascinating, yet largely forgotten, engine projects in motorsport history. Built by Bruce Crower, a legendary engine designer, the Crower 8 was an ambitious attempt to push the limits of racing power. Using Cosworth DFV heads, the engine combined cutting-edge technology of the time with Crower’s engineering prowess to create an 8-cylinder powerhouse. The design was intended to revolutionize open-wheel racing—its combination of Cosworth technology and Crower’s own expertise gave it immense potential on the track.
Unfortunately, the CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) regulations intervened, effectively banning the Crower 8 before much development could occur. The engine never got the chance to fully show its capabilities, but it remains an example of innovation that could have changed the sport forever.
