Jennifer Ringley was the internet’s first camgirl. And then she disappeared.

When we think about the webcam, it seems easy to take for granted, as most come built-in to laptops and are easy to attach to desktop computers, but when looking back to the mid-90s this was not true. In 1996, 19-year old Jennifer Kaye Ringley was a student at Dickson College in Pennsylvania when she purchased a webcam and put it up in her room, where internet users could see a stream of continually updated screenshots of her dorm room.
