While shopping malls began to pop up in the post-war 1950s, it was in the 1960s when they really came into their own. During the ’60s, at least three new shopping centers opened daily in America, and by 1975, malls and shopping centers made up a third of all U.S. retail sales. Without question, the ’80s marked the golden age of malls, featuring movie theaters, arcades, food courts, and hosting events like beauty pageants and celebrity meet and greets. The ’90s saw the rise of megamalls with experiential attractions like aquariums, and roller coasters, however, by the mid-2000s, the market became oversaturated, and coupled with online shopping, mall were clearly becoming an endangered species. Our Mall Rats collection harkens back to a time when you could spend all day at the mall – eating, shopping, and more often than not as a teen, loitering.
