Don’t be fooled by the proper Weizen glass filled to the brim with golden goodness… Club Schmitz was the father figure of Dallas dive bars and never tried to be something it wasn’t. This gloriously never-renovated spot had plastic pint cups for your beer, or mixers if you chose to bring your own liquor, but sadly, Club Schmitz served its last burger and beer on May 31, 2014, and it’s still hard to believe such a cool place was leveled to make way for yet another RaceTrac convenience store that’s now clogging up the intersection of Denton Drive and Webb Chapel Extension. Sure, you can still get a burger cooked on the Club Schmitz flat-top that’s now doing its business at Dot’s Hop House in Deep Ellum, but there’s no replicating the vibe of a glorious dive that opened its doors in 1946 when cousins Lawrence “Bigun” and Leonard Schmitz returned to Dallas following World War II and decided to open a bar. This Texas original may have started as a watering hole, but it eventually turned into a legendary burger house that would become the most family-friendly hang this side of Bachman Lake.
