Gulf’s storied racing history extends further into the past than most may realize. It was their interest in frontier-extending racing research that prompted it to attack the Indianapolis 500 with the legendary rear-engined “Gulf-Miller” four-wheel-drive cars back in 1938 and while their first outing at Indy was a bust, the very cars that lost that day soon hit the Bonneville Salt Flats and set numerous world records. Thankfully, Gulf stuck with their racing pursuits as they went on to be one of the most formidable teams in racing history with countless wins and records set everwhere from the World Endurance Championship and 24 Hours of Le Mans, to Formula One, IndyCar, and Can-Am. With lots of racing going on, you’d think that the distinctive blue and orange livery was well known by the late ’60s, but it wasn’t until 1967 that the iconic team colors were first introduced and just in time too, as the team would go on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968.
