May Day is Jay Day 1976 Vintage Women’s T-Shirt

$29.95

The first unofficial New York Smoke-In organized by the group that would later be known as ‘Yippies’ took place in Washington Square Park on May Day, Monday, May 1st, 1967 hence the term, “Jay Day.” Eventually, the event became more formalized and the first Saturday of May became the set date for the parade and rally. The events were a form of civil disobedience by individuals during a time of crackdowns on recreational drug use. Attendees openly smoked marijuana as they gathered in Washington Square Park and paraded down 5th Avenue towards Central Park where there were often cannabis-themed games and events as well as bands and other entertainment present. Thousands of people attended these events and despite the illegal nature of marijuana, there were typically few arrests made.
