Minnie Pearl’s Chicken 1967 Vintage Men’s T-Shirt

Minnie Pearl’s Chicken is a legendary case study of how not to run a restaurant franchising operation, and one that is still frequently referenced today. In the late 1960s, a Nashville entrepreneur persuaded Sarah Cannon, who performed as Minnie Pearl, to lend her name to a chain of fried chicken restaurants established to compete with top national chains. After initially reporting good results and enjoying public stock worth $64 million, the venture collapsed amid allegations of accounting irregularities and stock price manipulation. The company stated it had lost $5.5 million during the first half of 1969, but when the SEC investigated, it noted that the company had lost a whopping $31 million in 1969. The stock fell to just 44 cents and while the investigation cleared Cannon of involvement in financial wrongdoings, she was embarrassed by the negative publicity nonetheless. Financial issues aside, while the Colonel molded and cared for his operation from day one, there was no chicken recipe in this chicken business, instead it focused on selling franchises before even opening up a store. Of those that did open, every location had their own menu and way of cooking chicken, which is the absolute last thing a chain restaurant wants. After the SEC investigation in 1970, there were just 40 locations that had managed to open of the hundreds that had sold and few were turning a profit and began rapidly closing.

Not sure what size is your best fit? We recommend taking one of your current t-shirts, laying it flat and measuring it. The measurements in the chart below are taken with the shirt laying on a flat surface. To get the length, measure from the high shoulder point down to the bottom of the shirt. To get the width, measure approximately 1-inch below the armhole, across the chest, from seam to seam. While our tees are all made using premium, pre-shrunk, ring-spun cotton, there can be some shrinkage depending on your personal wash and dry cycles. With that said, if you’re on the fence, we always suggest going up a size.
