The Moon Dancer opened in 1957 in Paducah, the largest city in the Jackson Purchase region. Located at the confluence of the Tennessee and the Ohio rivers, halfway between St. Louis, Missouri, to the northwest and Nashville, Tennessee, to the southeast, the small town has almost always been a busy pass-through for river freight and the tavern was a frequent hang out for barge crews waiting for their embarkation notices.
