Description

As 1979 came to a closed, nobody had any idea that come May of the following year, Mount St. Helens would erupt with such violence that the top of the mountain locals have seen in the sky for generations would soon be more than 1,000′ shorter. On May 18, 1980, the deadliest and most violent volcanic event in U.S. history would lay an unreal path of destruction. Fifty-seven people were killed; 200 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways, and 185 miles of highway were destroyed. A massive debris avalanche, triggered by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1, caused a lateral eruption that reduced the elevation of the mountain’s summit from 9,677 ft to 8,363 ft, leaving a 1-mile wide horseshoe-shaped crater. The debris avalanche was 0.6 cubic miles in volume and ash was carried more than six states away. Ever since its main eruption, it had continuous volcanic activity until 2008. Despite this, geologists predict that future eruptions will be more destructive since the configuration of the lava domes there require more pressure to erupt. Despite the dangers, Mount St. Helens remains a popular hiking and climbing spot, and is climbed year-round. The Mount St. Helens eruption has the most ecological study of any eruption, because research into disturbance commenced immediately after the eruption, and because the eruption did not sterilize the immediate area. More than half of the papers on ecological response to volcanic eruption have come from studies of Mount St. Helens. The most important ecological concept that came from the study at Mount St. Helens is biological legacy. Biological legacies are the survivors of catastrophic disturbance: they can either be alive (e.g., plants that survive ashfall or pyroclastic flow), organic debris, or biotic patterns left over from before the disturbance. These biological legacies highly influence the re-establishment of the post-disturbance ecology, all of which appear to be thriving at Mount St. Helens.

Sizing

Not sure what size is your best fit? We recommend taking one of your current t-shirts, laying it flat and measuring it. The measurements in the chart below are taken with the shirt laying on a flat surface. To get the length, measure from the high shoulder point down to the bottom of the shirt. To get the width, measure approximately 1-inch below the armhole, across the chest, from seam to seam. While our tees are all made using premium, pre-shrunk, ring-spun cotton, there can be some shrinkage depending on your personal wash and dry cycles. With that said, if you’re on the fence, we always suggest going up a size.
