The Chinese-takeout container, with its Japanese-influenced origami folds, is a uniquely American invention. In 1894, Chicago inventor Frederick Weeks Wilcox patented the “paper pail,” which was a single piece of paper, creased into segments and folded into a container secured with a dainty wire handle on top. Wilcox’s box seems to have been a paper version of the existing wooden oyster pail boxes which were used to transport raw oysters. His inexpensive and efficient paper boxes quickly became the containers of choice for the burgeoning Chinese-food industry, though it wasn’t until nearly 80-years later that one of their most ubiquitous traits would be added. It was 1973 when a young graphic designer working for a national packaging company added a Chinese pagoda with the words ‘Thank You’ in red ink to the previously plain white containers that changed the look of Chinese take out forever. Later, ‘Enjoy’ would be tagged on as an option and the design would be replicated on bags and other containers used by Chinese restaurants for their takeout orders. While here in America (and even Canada), we view these classic Chinese food containers as a common symbol of authentic Chinese cuisine, these containers have never actually been used in China, making them a uniquely North American icon.

Not sure what size is your best fit? We recommend taking one of your current t-shirts, laying it flat and measuring it. The measurements in the chart below are taken with the shirt laying on a flat surface. To get the length, measure from the high shoulder point down to the bottom of the shirt. To get the width, measure approximately 1-inch below the armhole, across the chest, from seam to seam. While our tees are all made using premium, pre-shrunk, ring-spun cotton, there can be some shrinkage depending on your personal wash and dry cycles. With that said, if you’re on the fence, we always suggest going up a size.
