ThermoQuad Carburetors 1971 Vintage Men’s T-Shirt

Carter Carburetor Company in St. Louis, Missouri, was established in 1909 by William Carter, who started experimenting with carburetors while running a successful bicycle shop. His first cast brass carb could meter and deliver fuel more accurately than many competing units, and easily found a place in the market. Carter became a major OEM supplier to Detroit, as well as manufacturing competitor’s products under license for them. In 1971, they introduced the ThermoQuad four barrel. It was available in two sizes, rated according to air flow – 850 and 1000 CFM. The higher flow model was the largest street carburetor in terms of air flow when released, and was a factory part on many of the high-performance muscle cars of the era. Gear heads have a love/hate relationship with ThermoQuads, in that they either love them or hate them. Regardless of opinions either way, they’re a ubiquitous piece of muscle car history that are still quite plentiful today, and can be rebuilt to like new spec in an afternoon. As for Carter Carburetor Company, with fuel injection having replaced carburetors on most cars in the early ’80s, the plant closed in 1984, ceding the foundry to the City of St. Louis, which later became an EPA Superfund site after contaminants including TCE and PCBs were found in the soil.

Not sure what size is your best fit? We recommend taking one of your current t-shirts, laying it flat and measuring it. The measurements in the chart below are taken with the shirt laying on a flat surface. To get the length, measure from the high shoulder point down to the bottom of the shirt. To get the width, measure approximately 1-inch below the armhole, across the chest, from seam to seam. While our tees are all made using premium, pre-shrunk, ring-spun cotton, there can be some shrinkage depending on your personal wash and dry cycles. With that said, if you’re on the fence, we always suggest going up a size.
