The company was founded in Kent, Connecticut, by former airline pilot William “Bill” Litwin, who became convinced that compact Japanese kerosene heaters could offer Americans a cheaper way to heat individual rooms during the energy crisis. After striking a deal with Japanese manufacturer Toyotomi, Kero-Sun began importing and marketing the heaters in the United States, with sales climbing from just a few thousand units in the mid-1970s to hundreds of thousands annually by the early ’80s. Models such as the Omni series became familiar fixtures in homes, workshops, and cabins, and by 1981 Kero-Sun was doing roughly $100 million in annual business. Rising competition, warmer winters, falling fuel prices, and growing safety concerns eventually hurt the company badly, and Kero-Sun entered bankruptcy proceedings in 1983, but its orange-and-black branding and distinctive portable heaters remain strongly associated with the era’s search for economical alternative heat.
