By 1960–61, pale Helles accounted for about 89 percent of Löwenbräu’s beer sales, compared with only 11 percent for traditional Dunkles, and bottled beer had overtaken draught in the brewery’s sales mix. Golden, bottom-fermented, gently malty and only moderately bitter, Münchner Hell was the everyday beer of Munich beer halls, neighborhood taverns and gardens—the sort of beer ordered simply as ein Bier. Löwenbräu itself was enjoying renewed strength during Germany’s postwar boom, rebuilding its domestic business while expanding aggressively abroad; by 1963 it had become Germany’s leading export brewery.
