The Price Is Right is a television game show franchise originally produced by Mark Goodson that first aired in 1956. In the show, contestants compete to win cash and prizes by guessing the pricing of merchandise, making it one of the first game shows to break away from the quiz show format used in most other shows. The program has been critically successful and remains a stalwart in the television ratings despite initial rejection by the networks. The show was revamped in 1972 to include multiple games that lead up to a new feature, called the Showcase Showdown, to select which players would play in the Showcase finale of each episode.
