As if one needed any more evidence that muscle car owners fashioned themselves as racers – beyond the adaptation of racing stripes, bucket seats, and loud exhausts to their rides – consider the so-called “mag wheel.” Yeah, it looked a lot more aggressive than a steelie with poverty caps, and certainly, many muscle car owners believed the name came from a shortening of Magnum 500, but hot rodders had been flinging the term around long before the muscle car era, referring to the actual magnesium wheels they used on both their race cars and on their hot rods. And if any one name has been synonymous with magnesium wheels over the years, it’s Ted Halibrand’s. This design is a throwback to Halibrand’s original logo and is easily recognized by any motorhead worth their salt as the seal of the real deal going all the way back to 1946.
