Sturgis 2021, the 10-day Motorcycle Rally is set to come to an end Sunday, after a rally believed to be one of the biggest in its 83-year history, sparking concerns the massive gathering will serve as a superspreader of coronavirus—like last year’s edition did. Around 700,000 people were expected over the course of the event, with Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin saying it’s the most people he’s seen in the 31 years he’s worked the rally. The city of Sturgis has a permanent population of around 7,000. Last year, Covid cases and hospitalizations skyrocketed in South Dakota in the weeks after the rally, which attracted around 462,000 people to Sturgis. Health officials are concerned the delta variant present this year along with larger crowds, which are not required to wear masks, could spark a new surge in Covid cases, with Dr. Anthony Fauci saying he’s “very concerned” about that possibility… read more >
