Richard Kiel, the towering actor best known for portraying steel-toothed villain Jaws in a pair of James Bond films, has died. He was 74. Kelley Sanchez, director of communications at Saint Agnes Medical Center, confirmed Wednesday that Kiel was a patient at the hospital and died. Kiel’s agent, Steven Stevens, also confirmed his death. Both declined to provide further details. The 7-foot-2-inch performer famously played the cable-chomping henchman who tussled with Roger Moore’s Bond in 1977’s “The Spy Who Loved Me” and 1979’s “Moonraker.” Bond quipped of the silent baddie: “His name’s Jaws. He kills people.” Kiel’s other memorable roles included bullying golf spectator Mr. Larson in “Happy Gilmore,” lethal Dr. Loveless’s assistant Voltaire in “The Wild, Wild West” and extraterrestrial Kanamit in “The Twilight Zone.” He also reprised the character of Jaws for several James Bond video games, and voiced the thug Vlad in the animated Disney film “Tangled.”
Listen, I know I’m probably grossly underestimating this guy’s career by simply pointing to him being Mr. Larson from Happy Gilmore. His most iconic role was as Jaws in a couple Bond films. But to people my age, his most iconic role was Mr. Larson from Happy Gilmore. Hands down. The golf spectator with a nail stuck in his head who taunts Shooter McGavin. It’s quite possibly the funniest character in a movie with the fewest amount of lines. He was probably in the movie for a total of 50 seconds. Didn’t matter. He stole every single scene he was in Happy Gilmore. Absolutely classic lines like “I believe that’s Mr. Gilmore’s jacket!” and “I beg to differ, Happy Gilmore accomplished that feat no more than an hour ago.” So good and so quotable. Quotes my friends and I still use to this day completely out of context but equally as hilarious. Any of his quotes are a guaranteed laugh when you’re golfing with your buddies. So RIP to Richard Kiel and Mr. Larson, and thanks for the laughs. Read more >
