Martin Thompson arrived in Oregon in the late 1880s and gained experience working at flour mills in Champoeg and Turner before accepting a management position at Boston Mills in Shedd along the Calapooia River. Not long afterward, he partnered with the mill’s owner and purchased a half interest in the operation. By 1897, Thompson had become the sole proprietor and began modernizing the facility, replacing traditional limestone millstones with more efficient steel roller mills. One of the first products produced by the upgraded mill was a premium hard wheat flour Thompson branded Valley Rose, inspired by the abundant roses that flourished throughout the Willamette Valley. As the business grew, he renamed it Boston Roller Mills. Following Thompson’s death in 1910, ownership passed to two of his sons, who renamed the company Thompson Bros. & Co. They expanded operations in 1917 with new storage silos that allowed year-round production and broadened the product line to include farina, pastry flour, and whole wheat flour. In 1930, the mill entered its third generation of family ownership and became Thompson’s Flouring Mills. The Thompson family continued operating the business until 1974. Today, the historic mill remains preserved as Thompson’s Mills State Heritage Site, one of Oregon’s most unique and well-preserved industrial landmarks.

Not sure what size is your best fit? We recommend taking one of your current t-shirts, laying it flat and measuring it. The measurements in the chart below are taken with the shirt laying on a flat surface. To get the length, measure from the high shoulder point down to the bottom of the shirt. To get the width, measure approximately 1-inch below the armhole, across the chest, from seam to seam. While our tees are all made using premium, pre-shrunk, ring-spun cotton, there can be some shrinkage depending on your personal wash and dry cycles. With that said, if you’re on the fence, we always suggest going up a size.
