Design Description
During the 1970s, Moynaq was a thriving fishing port on the shores of the Aral Sea, home to tens of thousands of residents and a prosperous seafood industry. But an ambitious Soviet irrigation program aimed at transforming Central Asia into a cotton-producing powerhouse would ultimately devastate the region. Beginning in the 1960s, the waters of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers—the Aral Sea's primary sources—were diverted into vast irrigation canals, dramatically reducing the lake's inflow. As the Aral Sea steadily shrank, so too did Moynaq's economy. Polluted agricultural runoff laden with fertilizers and pesticides contaminated the remaining water, accelerating the collapse of the ecosystem. By 2000, the once-vast sea had fragmented into several isolated bodies of water, leaving Moynaq stranded more than 150 kilometers (93 miles) from the shoreline on the edge of the newly formed Aralkum Desert. The town's rusting fishing fleet, abandoned in the sand, has since become one of the world's most striking symbols of environmental disaster and a destination for disaster tourism. There has, however, been some cause for optimism. In neighboring Kazakhstan, construction of the Kokaral Dam was completed in 2005 to restore the North Aral Sea by preventing its remaining water from flowing south. The project proved remarkably successful. Within a few years, water levels rose significantly, salinity declined, and native fish species began returning. By 2013, commercial fishing had resumed on a limited scale, demonstrating that with sustained conservation efforts, at least part of one of the world's greatest environmental catastrophes can begin to recover.

Not sure what size is your best fit? We recommend taking one of your current t-shirts, laying it flat and measuring it. The measurements in the chart below are taken with the shirt laying on a flat surface. To get the length, measure from the high shoulder point down to the bottom of the shirt. To get the width, measure approximately 1-inch below the armhole, across the chest, from seam to seam. While our tees are all made using premium, pre-shrunk, ring-spun cotton, there can be some shrinkage depending on your personal wash and dry cycles. With that said, if you’re on the fence, we always suggest going up a size.
