Hot rodding as we know it today started in the 1920s and 1930s when young people across the country began taking old Ford Model Ts and Model As and modifying them in their garages. They would add bigger engines, souped-up transmissions, and a variety of other parts to make their cars faster and more powerful. This was the beginning of the Hot Rod movement. The 1950s and 1960s saw the golden age of Hot Rods, with more and more people getting involved in the scene. Car clubs began to form, and race tracks were built so that people could show off their customized rides. This was also when Hot Rods began to be seen as works of art, with custom paint jobs and airbrushed designs. The 1970s and 1980s saw a rise in the customization of Hot Rods, with more and more parts becoming available to customize a Hot Rod from the ground up. Engine swaps, interior modifications, and paint jobs became commonplace, and the Hot Rod scene began to become more organized with the formation of the National Hot Rod Association.
